The Jazz Nation- CD Review
(Soul Searching)
Originally designed in the 1930's, the Hammond B3 Organ, took basic tones and layered them together to render what we recognize today as its signature sound. With incredible versatility, this instrument in the right hands is still unequalled by its digital counterparts of today. Joe Kurasz is one such artist. He has composed music for the soap opera Guiding Light, television show The Bravest and scored original soundtracks for the film The Followers . On his latest album, Soul Searching , Kurasz conveys a nostalgic feeling and declares in the liner notes, "Soul is something you can't hold, but you know it when you feel it, especially in a song." With many original compositions Kurasz lets you know he's the real deal.
I've never heard the B3 played like this before. You'll take notice too as Kurasz takes a step on the funky side with the tunes Funky B and Takin' A Break . Kurasz lays down some serious B3 attitude as he showcases great improvisation while George Naha answers perfectly with some stand-up guitar work. Gerald Albright guests on the CD bringing his sultry alto sax to the Crossroads . With Kurasz on B3/keyboards, Naha on guitar and a great hook, this sexy tune has got to be one of my favorites on the disc. One thing's for sure... it'll leave you wanting more!
Kurasz switches gears on the songs Uncommon Ground and Mr. Soul . Featuring the piano and gorgeous flowing melodies, he touches a chord. The later song is complemented with beautiful vocals and a reminiscent horn section. Wherever You Want To Be continues the mellow mood with the B3 bringing a poignant expression of emotion.
Kurasz covers a few songs on the disc. From the first few notes, I had an immediate connection to the Jim Croce tune Operator . Kurasz communicates a soulful longing that really does this number justice and his interpretation of the song, If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want To Be Right , I think, is better than the original. The B3 brings a smoky vibe and confesses the meaning of the song.
On his latest record, Joe Kurasz has done some Soul Searching . Full of interesting melodies and fantastic improvisations, this is an album that will stir yours! Soul Searching resonates!
